John Barger, Managing Director and Partner
John is Managing Director of NorthernCross. He started his career in law, moving to finance at Citicorp and Bankers Trust. He left investment banking to co-found Latin American Reinsurance Company (now AXA/Latin America) in 1996 with $100 Million in capital from Marsh Capital, XL Capital and Arch Capital. After completely exiting that business with his partners in 2001, he founded NorthernCross. With NorthernCross, he has invested in numerous private companies and served on multiple corporate boards, currently also acting as a replacement investment manager/GP to a PE fund (limited partnership). He also advises other PE managers and GPs. From 2011 to 2014, he was the Investment Board Chair of the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA), responsible for over $70 Billion in assets across multiple strategies including PE, public equities and alternative assets. In 2018, he was nominated by the President and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as a Governor of the United States Postal Service, where he served through 2022. John earned his BA from Ohio Wesleyan University, his JD from the University of California at San Francisco Law School and his MSc in Finance and Accounting from the London School of Economics. He is an Eagle Scout and lives with his wife in suburban Los Angeles, near their two adult children.
Chun Lai, Managing Director and Partner
Chun has been an advisor to NorthernCross since 2019, representing the firm on numerous private company boards and providing strategic advice across NorthernCross’ portfolio, focusing on technology, markets and organizational strategy. He began his career as a strategy consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, running diverse projects in multiple industries. Prior to BAH, he led the successful turnaround of a Hong Kong division of a public corporation and partnered with an SAP supported start-up applying enterprise software to the automotive dealership vertical market. Chun is a graduate of the University of Western Australia (Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance) and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor of Science in Economics, Summa Cum Laude). An ardent investor and leader, he divides his time with private investing and engagement in the leadership of a non-profits, including most recently as the Vice President of Online Learning, Finance and Operations for Westminster Theological Seminary. He resides in Princeton, New Jersey with his wife and four children.
David Hadley, Managing Director and Partner
David is a Senior Advisor to NorthernCross Partners, advising NorthernCross on its private equity and replacement manager activities. He began his career at Bankers Trust/BT Alex. Brown, where key assignments included co-founding of BT's high yield capital markets group and being the managing director responsible for delivering investment banking services to communications service providers worldwide. After Deutsche Bank acquired BT Alex. Brown, David founded and led Hadley Partners, a boutique investment banking firm delivering M&A and capital raising/advisory services to entrepreneur owned companies. David is currently the vice chairman of Module X Solutions (MXS), a manufacturing & engineering business, having founded and led a company that MXS acquired.
David received his BA from Dartmouth College and his MSc. in Economic History from the London School of Economics. He and his wife live in Manhattan Beach, California and have four adult children.
Michael Schwartz, CPA Managing Director and Partner
Michael has been an advisor to NorthernCross since 2015 and is a CPA with over 40 years of accounting, advisory and investment experience. He was the founder and managing partner of Schwartz & Company, LLP, a regional Certified Public Accounting Firm established in 1991 with offices in New York City, New York, Bellmore, New York and Boca Raton, Florida. From 2001 through 2015, Michael served as CFO of JLL Partners, a PE firm that made investments in middle market companies. Michael has also served as senior advisor to a select number of PE firms that have assets under management in excess of $5 Billion. In addition, Michael is a member of several advisory boards for both private and non‐profit companies and was a member of the School of Business Board of Advisors for one of New York’s leading universities. Michael holds a Master of Arts in Taxation from Long Island University and a Master of Arts in Education and Science from The City University of New York. He received his BA in Accounting and Education from The City University of New York.
David Parshall, Managing Director
David has been working with NorthernCross since 2015. He is currently a Senior Advisor to NorthernCross and is a Managing Director and Co-Founder of Private Equity Investors, a NorthernCross client since 2015. David has over 40 years of related investment banking and PE experience and has served on the advisory boards of fund and company investments. Prior to his current role at an affiliate of NorthernCross, David was a Managing Director of The Blackstone Group and a member of its Advisory Committee. David was previously a Managing Director of Lehman Brothers, where he developed broad experience over a period of 14 years providing corporate finance and merger and acquisition advisory services for clients covering a cross-section of economic sectors. David worked at Lehman Brothers in Investment Banking in both New York and San Francisco before joining Blackstone. David received his A.B. from Columbia College and an M.B.A. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.
Carter Fletcher, Director
Carter works in the Firm’s New York City office and is a Director at an affiliate of NorthernCross Partners. He works with NorthernCross Partners and with NCHCAP, a general partner/management company owned by NorthernCross Partners, providing operational, analytical, and strategic services to NorthernCross Partners, NCHCAP, and fund portfolio companies. He received his B.S. in Finance, Summa Cum Laude, from The King’s College in New York City. His interests include business, investing, theology, religion, travel, and sports.
Robert James Winans, Chief Administrative Officer
R.J. works in the firm’s Los Angeles office and is a Director at NorthernCross, overseeing the firm’s operations and performing advisory and board services to some of the firm’s portfolio companies. He also assists NCHCAP, LLC, a GP/management company owned by NorthernCross, providing operational, analytical and strategic services to the GP and to fund portfolio companies. He holds a Master’s degree from Duke University, with a concentration on ethics and corporate social responsibility. He also holds a certificate in Business Management from Harvard Business School. He received his undergraduate degree from Biola University, with a BA in Public Relations and Religious Studies. He has a particular interest in economic and social investing, ethics and how the application of strong investment techniques can lead to excellent financial returns, governance and human and community flourishing.
Charles Campbell, Esq., General Counsel
Chuck is General Counsel to NorthernCross and has been working with the firm since 2009. His legal career spans four decades of private practice, serving as a partner in several major national and international law firms. Over his career, his practice areas have included corporate law, finance, PE, restructuring and M&A transactions. He provides advice to NorthernCross and serves as a director on certain boards of NorthernCross portfolio companies, also serving as general counsel to several start-up and emerging growth ventures through his own law firm. Chuck earned his BA in Business-Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Southern California Law Center.
Christopher Fuller, Senior Advisor
Chris is an advisor to NorthernCross, also serving as a director on one NorthernCross portfolio company. He has over 30 years of PE and merchant banking experience, earning his AB degree in Engineering Science from Dartmouth College, a BE in Electrical Engineering and an ME in Engineering Management from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College. He began his career in 1989 at Bankers Trust Company and Salomon Brothers, where he focused on structured products, M&A advisory and capital raising for important clients. He transitioned to PE investing in 1996, sourcing, executing and managing PE investments as a partner at BT Capital Partners, Harvest Partners and First Atlantic Capital. In 2007 he founded Verus Investment Partners in New York City, serving as its Managing Partner and as a board member on all Verus portfolio company boards. He is currently Chairman of Belcam Beauty. As a PE principal, Chris has been responsible for 14 platform company investments across multiple industries (consumer products/technology/manufacturing/financial services). He has overseen aggregate invested equity in excess of $250 Million, with aggregate transaction value of over $4 Billion, and realized top quartile returns for his investors.
